Shawn Mendes

20-year-old Canadian pop superstar Shawn Mendes was welcomed back to Glasgow with open arms by his loyal Scottish fans when he kicked off the UK leg of his global tour at The SSE Hydro on 6 April 2019.

Shawn Mendes is a true Prince of Pop with a sterling reputation to match – polite, charming and all-round Mr Nice Guy. However, since last gracing The SSE Hydro stage two years ago, he’s gained edge and grown up.  (Ok, somewhat – he’s not reached Bieber bad boy status…yet.) Shawn recently created a sensation posing shirtless in a Calvin Klein underwear ad and has pushed back against illusions of perfection by opening up about his anxiety with brutally honest songs such as ‘In My Blood’.

Shawn touched on this subject in his Hydro show by admitting to the crowd that this was his first performance in a year without taking anxiety calming Beta Blocker medication - “If you get nervous it means you care and I care about nothing more in the world than you guys, so that’s why my hands shake.” His proud fans were quick to show their love and support by cheering him on.

Each fan was given a wristband upon entry which lit up once the show began, turning the thousands gathered in the arena into a mesmerising sea of flashing coloured lights – all timed to the music. This spectacular light show was extended to the B-stage which was built around a towering illuminated rose.

Shawn performed an energetic show full of his hits including There’s Nothin’ Holdin’ Me Back, Stiches and Treat You Better. Throughout his 90-minute set devoted fans sang along to every word and offered ecstatic screams of support whenever he glanced their way.

Far from being just a pretty face for swooning Scottish teens – Shawn’s impressive vocal talent and musicianship was clear as he finished with a cover of Coldplay’s Fix You and fan favourite anthem In My Blood.
