It was a rite of passage for young and old clubbers alike. It was a place of dance, music, new friends and hedonism. A revered Glaswegian cultural home, bringing communities together. More than that, it was renowned the world over for so many as a venue which held the best nights of their life.
The Arches was an institution.
And what a perfect way to celebrate 20 years of an institution so sadly missed, than with the tunes of legendary DJs Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk, Daft Punk, Swedish House Mafia and so many more. Colours Classical took over The SSE Hydro on Friday 29 September – bringing together some of the biggest names in dance music, the 60-piece Scottish Festival Orchestra and the Tron Community Choir.
Close your eyes to the sound of Faithless classic 'Insomnia' or Van Dyk's 'For An Angel' and you could picture yourself back beneath those arches, drink in hand, pals in tow, edging to the front towards the DJ.
Apt perhaps the final track was a remix of Grace’s 'Not Over Yet', released in 1995 - the very first year of The Arches. A hint of a comeback, the crowd hoped? Even if it is over and it is farewell for good, it was a fond way to reminisce.
“Here we, here we, here we…”
