Kendrick Lamar - The DAMN. Tour
For one night only, the bowl of The SSE Hydro was transformed into waves of people going wild for the south LA hip-hop beat of Kendrick Lamar. The critically acclaimed DAMN Tour has seen Kung Fu Kenny sell out arenas across the globe over the past few months, and we were HYPED to welcome him to the Hydro.
Kendrick’s Asian-inspired tour sees him star in short movie clips, taking on the world as Kung Fu Kenny. Occasionally flanked by a martial artist, he performs mesmerising routines with a Samurai sword. Midway through he appears in the middle of the arena, elevated above a… cage of light? It looked incredible and put him smack bang in front of seated fans. Win win.
The Compton born and bred rapper treated his ‘day one fans’ to a high-octane set list, which comprised a mix of new tracks from the tour’s namesake album, DAMN, and classics such as Swimming Pools and a cover of Schoolboy Q’s Collard Greens. Not forgetting his roots, Kenny also treated the audience to singles from his first studio album, Section.80 (2011).
The encore saw him refer to his recently restored faith in Christianity with a moving performance of GOD, from the DAMN album.
It’s no surprise that Kendrick has received a vast number of accolades, including a listing in Billboard’s 10 Greatest Rappers of All Time. Since driving the Glasgow crowd insane, King Kenny has announced his return this summer to Scotland where he’ll play Bellahouston Park as part of Summer Sessions, and we’re sure it will be just as electric.
